Short bio:
A geologist with a PhD in geography, Fausto Guzzetti is a senior research scientist with the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR, https://www.cnr.it/people/fausto.guzzetti). Since 2009, he leads the CNR Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (Istituto di Ricerca per la Protezione Idrogeologica, http://www.irpi.cnr.it). The author of more than 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals and books, his research interests have concentrated on geo-hydrological hazards, mainly landslides and their consequences. He participated in a number of European projects, including Damocles, E2-C2, Eurorisk-Preview and RiskAware. He was PI of the MORFEO project of the Italian Space Agency for the exploitation of remote sensing data and technologies for landslide identification and mapping, and for landslide monitoring and forecasting; and of the FP7 projects DORIS, Ground Deformations Risk Scenarios: An Advanced Assessment Service, and LAMPRE, Landslide Modelling and tools for vulnerability assessment Preparedness and Recovery management. For the Italian National Department for Civil protection, he coordinated a project for the design and the implementation of a national-scale landslide early warning system, and for the evaluation of landslide risk in Italy. He coordinated the CNR technical and scientific activities in the area affected by the 6.3 Mw, April 6th, 2009, L’Aquila earthquake. From 2012, he is member of the Italian Major Risks National Committee. A founding member of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), he was president of the EGU Natural Hazards Division and chief editor of the EGU journal Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences. In 2008, he received the EGU Union Service Award. He contributes to POLARIS, a web portal on landslide and flood risk to the population in Italy (http://polaris.irpi.cnr.it).
My best professional achievement:
Contributing to discover and quantify the frequency size (length, width, area, volume) statistics of landslides, a key part of landslide hazard and risk assessment. Leading the design and the early implementation of a national landslide forecasting system for Italy.
My best personal achievement:
I have been in some of the deepest (at the time) caves in the world. More recently, I gave a TED talk on why landslides are not sexy.
