Short bio:
Massimo Bernaschi is, by education, a physicist that has leveraged computer simulations to study complex phenomena for thirty years. He was in the first team of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics that built the APE special purpose computer for the simulation of Lattice Gauge Theories. Then he spent ten years working in the IBM European Center for Scientific and Engineering Computing where he received two Outstanding Technical Achievements Awards. Since 1998 he is with the National Research Council of Italy as Chief Technology Officer of the Institute for Applied Computing. His main scientific interests are parallel computing, modeling of complex systems (finance, biology and medicine), systems and network security, high performance computing. He acts as adviser of the Italian Treasury for problems related to the management of the Public Debt and of the major Italian Law Enforcement Agencies for problems In digital forensics. He has been responsible for a number of projects sponsored by both public (e.g., European Commission) and private organizations in fields that include Indexing and Classification of large sets of unstructured texts, Traffic Data Analysis, Cryptoanalysis, Portfolio Optimization. In 2012 he has been named “Cuda Fellow” (first in Europe) for his contributions to the development of multi-GPU (Graphics Processing Units) programming techniques.
My best professional achievement:
The design and the implementation of an IBM product for parallel processing that has been used worldwide.
