Short bio:
Maurizio Ribera d’Alcalà, got a Laurea degree in physical chemistry but instead of continuing his studies in solution chemistry he had the opportunity, as a scholar at Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn to get into marine ecology and, more interesting, evolutionary biology. The stimulating context of Stazione Zoologica the highly attracting ‘new field’ made him shifting from physical-chemistry to marine biogeochemistry and plankton ecology. Having as a main focus plankton he explored, among other aspects, the physical-biological coupling, especially for what fluid motion concerns, the photobiology, the different modeling approaches, the impact of plankton on biogeochemical cycles and bio-optics of the ocean, the swimming and feeding behavior of copepods and some molecular mechanisms driving key organismal responses. He participated, with different roles, to several national and international scientific programs and PhD programs. After having been Research Director at SZN for the last 15 years he is now associate researcher in the same Institute and professor of Physical , Chemical and Biological Oceanography at the University ‘Federico II’ in Napoli.
My best professional achievement:
Training, mentoring and, often, inspiring several young scientists.
My best personal achievement:
Besides a daughter, of whom I am particularly proud and my life in couple, the very good relationships with most of the people I met in my life, were they students, colleagues or friends.
