Nicola Apollonio Nicola Apollonio is a Research Scientist at the Istituto per le Applicazioni del Calcolo "Mauro Picone"of the Italian National Research Council. He graduated in Statistics from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" and earned a PhD in Operations Research form the same University. His research interests mainly focus in Discrete mathematics, Graph Theory and Combinatorial Optimization especially at the interplay between combinatorial structures and binary matrices with a special look at graphs and hypergraphs that model paths interaction. He keeps aiming at applying methods, tools and ideas from the fields above to model real-life problems. A first reward in this respect was the first theoretical study of “Electoral Gerrymandering” namely, how to win elections if you are free to design electoral districts possibly regardless of how many votes you get.
